Not only are the leaves of autumn beautiful, but so are the nuts and
berries and so I wanted to create a jewellery set which focussed on the
Fruits of Autumn. Again in this set, much of the colour is achieved by
using alcohol inks on Sculpey Premo Accents Pearl polymer clay. The
inks can be used before or after baking. If used before, I have found
that the inks are absorbed by the clay and the colours turn out darker.
Using the inks on baked clay allows one to play around with the various
colours more and to get a lighter effect. Whether used before or after
baking, it is important to seal the pieces with some kind of varnish or
glaze. However, it is best to use a finish that protects against ultra
violet radiation to prolong the vibrancy of the alcohol ink colours, but
it needs to be a finish which is compatible with polymer clay. If you
are unsure which glazes and finishes are best to use and which should be
avoided, I encourage you to read Ginger Davis Allman's Blue Bottle Tree article - Understanding Polymer Clay Glaze, Sealer and Varnish.
